Do you want to be important to this person, to be especial and make a difference to his/her life? Do you want this person to care for you and be concerned about you in a special way? If you do, open your eyes and see that you are foolishly inviting others to reserve you for themselves, to restrict your freedom for their benefit, to control your behavior, your growth and development so that it will suit their interest. It is as if the other person has said to you “If you want to be especial to me then you must meet my conditions. Because the moment you cease to live up to my expectations, you will cease to be especial.” You wanted to be especial to someone, didn’t you? So you must pay a price in lost freedom. You must dance to the other person’s tune just as you demand that other persons dance to yours if they want to be especial to you. Pause now to ask yourself if it is worth paying so much for so little. Imagine you say to this person whose special love you want, “Leave me free to be myself, to think my thoughts, to indulge my taste, to follow my inclination, to behave in ways that I decide are to my liking.” The moment you say those words you will understand that you are asking for the impossible. To ask to be especial to someone means essentially to be bound to the task of making yourself pleasing to this person. And therefore you lose your freedom. Take all the time you need to realize this. Maybe now you are ready to say, “I’d rather have my freedom than your love.” If you could either have company in prison or walk the earth in freedom all alone, which would you choose? Now say to this person, “I leave you free to be yourself, to think your thoughts, to indulge your taste, follow your inclinations, behave in any way that you decide is to your liking.” The moment you say that you will observe one of two things: Either your heart will resist those words and you will be exposed for the clinger and exploiter that you are; so now is the time to examine your false belief that without this person you cannot live or cannot be happy. Or your heart will pronounce the words sincerely and in that very instant all control, manipulation, exploitation, possessiveness, jealousy will drop. “I leave you free to be yourself: to think your thoughts, indulge your tastes, follow your inclinations, behave in ways that you decide are to your liking.” And you will notice something else. The person automatically ceases to be especial and important to you. And he/she becomes important the way a sunset or a symphony is lovely in itself. The way a tree is especial in itself and not for the fruit or the shade that it can offer you. Your beloved will then belong not to you but to everyone or to no one like the sunrise and the tree. Test it by saying those words again: “I leave you free to be yourself…” In saying those words you have set yourself free. You are now ready for love. For when you cling, what you offer the other is not love but a chain by which both you and your beloved are bound. Love can only exist in freedom. The true lover seeks the good of his beloved which requires especially the liberation of the beloved from the lover.”

Each year these blossoming blue fields attract thousands of tourists. Hitachi Park is located in the Ibaraki Prefecture on Honsyu in Japan. Its a beautiful spectacle during the flowering of the nemophila. Nemophilas are annual flowers. The word is a combination of the Greek words “nemos” (small forest) and “phileo” (love). The Japanese word “hitachi” translates to dawn. Taken together: “small forest love in dawn.” A blue heaven on Earth.

Key: This activity is divided into different sections, with multiple questions for each. Questions in italics are reflective only of what happens in the universe of your character such as, “Why are Character A and Character B friends?” Unbolded or Italicized questions are reflective of the happenings and choices in the Pokemon world.

INTRO

1. The Pokemon Professor! Who is the guiding role model or mentor for your character?

2. The many uses of Pokemon. Some people use Pokemon for battles, others keep them as pets. Others research them or use them for contests. What would your character use Pokemon for?

3. Are you a Boy, or a Girl? Well… this is pretty easy. What is the gender of your character?

4. What is your name? Unlike the game, which has a handy dropdown list, this is REAL LIFE (okay not really). But, honestly, what is the name of your character?

5. My grandson has been your rival since you were a baby but I can’t remember his name. What is the name of the character your main character has a “rivalry” with? Why are they rivals?

LET’S BEGIN

1. A world of dreams and adventures awaits! Where does your character live? (Feel free to put them in one of the canon regions, a region of your own design, or simply tell us where they live in their universe.)

2. Everyone leaves home someday… What prompts your character to leave home for this adventure? Do they want to explore and make new friends and strengthen the bond with their Pokemon? Or do they have a deeper reason for leaving?

3. Ash! You’re late! Does your character get to the Lab on time to receive their starter? Or are they late? Are they usually punctual or tardy?

4. Torchic, Squirtle, Snivy… Who do you choose? Out of all the current starter Pokemon [even the new ones Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie], which starter does your character choose? Why? What do they name their starter?

5. Battle your rival! What starter does your rival choose? (Keep in mind, that if your character chose a Fire starter, your rival would choose Water; if you chose Grass, they would choose Fire; and if you chose Water, they would have a Grass starter). Who wins the very first battle between the two of you? How does the winner react? How does the loser react?

6. A Mission to the Next Town! Having received their PokeDex and PokeBalls, your character is also given a mission by the mentor. What does this mission entail? What kind of reward would the mentor give upon completion?

NOW COMES THE FUN PART…

7. The First Encounter. What is the first Pokemon your character runs into? How do they handle the situation- do they faint the Pokemon for the experience, capture it and name it, or do they run away from the battle?

8. Oh… Shiny! Your character has come to the very first Gym. The leader of this gym is the closest friend of your character [in your canon. At this point, they do not know each other]. What is the type of this Gym (base this on what that character would choose for Pokemon) and what Pokemon do they have? How many tries does it take before your character gains the Gym badge? Think about what your character’s team would be like at this point. What brings/brought these two together?

9. Making a Splash! Time for the second Gym! The leader of this gym is another close friend or romantic interest (pick either) for your character. What is the type of this Gym (again, think about what this character would pick) and what Pokemon does this Gym leader use? How many tries does it take to get this badge? What is your character’s team like at this point? What brought/brings your main character together with this character?

10. What’s this? [NAME] is evolving! Your character’s starter Pokemon is evolving- how does your character react? Do they let it evolve? Are they surprised? Excited? Describe the feelings at this moment.

11. Thinking about style. How does your character train and use their Pokemon in battle? Do they go more for all out offensives or defensive strategies such as altering stats? Why is that?

SKIPPING THROUGH TIME

1. I’ve never seen that Pokemon before! What would be the Legendary Pokemon that becomes the guardian or symbol of your character? Why is that? Describe the first meeting with this Pokemon. Does your character befriend the Legendary? Capture it? Scare it off?

2. The Final Boss… but not Quite! Your character finally reaches the final Gym! And the leader is none other than- [Main Antagonist]. What is the typing of this Gym, and what are the Pokemon used by the main antagonist? Describe the battle between your character and the main antagonist. What is your character’s team like at this point? What is the relationship between the main antagonist and your character?

3. At Last, I’ve Beat the Elite Four and It’s !!! Your character has made it through the Elite Four only to discover that their Rival is the Champion and they must defeat them in battle! How does this battle go down? What are the teams of each character like? Who is the winner? What is the aftermath of the battle like?

END CREDITS

1. Final Goals. What does your character do after the Championship battle? Does your character found a town? Become a Gym Leader (if so, what is the type and team)? Settle down? Travel to a new region? Something else? (Think about your character’s end goals in-canon and translate them to Pokeverse).

2. I Love You Guys. What would be your character’s final team? Why those specific Pokemon? Where and how did your character get those Pokemon?

Now that we’ve done this- think about anything else Pokemon related your character could do. Maybe you want to write your own crossover with your characters as Pokemon Trainers? Regardless, I hope you had fun!

Except:

Those prices don’t reflect the price at checkout, only for a single meal. Many people don’t have the money to buy in bulk. Like, there is no frikkin way a whole chicken cost $5.

Those grocery store prices look pretty damn low for where I live. Remember that food deserts are a very real thing.

Those meals take TIME to prepare. Many people work multiple jobs and don’t have the time to spend HOURS cooking a single dinner.

How about the time it takes to clean up after dinner to? Are you going to ask off work or give up sleep to do this?

What about the gas/water/electricity it takes to make this meal in your own home. You are paying the bills now after all.

Having a stocked kitchen with all of the pots, pans, spoons, plates, cutting boards, etc, is not FREE. You need to have the money to actually be able to own all of these things.

Knowing how to COOK that food is not some human instinct. If you’ve never been taught, then you have to learn. Again, this takes time and often money. Cooking classes and cookbooks aren’t free.

Being able to go to a store requires a CAR and TIME. Neither or those things are free. What about the gas to get to the store? Or bus fare? How about taking time off of work to go do this shopping? If you are on an hourly wage, how much does that amount to?

This post shows an incredible naiveté about how much is REALLY costs (in both time and money) to eat healthy, and it borders of classism to act like poor people are just being lazy or “stupid” for eating fast food.

Fucking this!

This kind of comparision has been nagging me since the first time I saw it but couldn’t pinpoint why. Exellent analysis above. To add to that, not everyone have the energy to do all the cooking and cleaning up after a day of hardwork. I know I only want to crash to bed and eat whatever available.

Here are 9 exercises to help you discover your viewpoint character(s) voice. Select the ones that appeal most. Get into the mind of your character. Free-write the answer to each question in first-person, as if YOU are the character.

First-person, remember. That will help you get a sense of the character’s voice.

EXERCISE #1: Learning Style

1. How do you learn best? Observation? Participation? Trial and error? Rumination and cogitation? Consulting experts? Writing?

Example to get you started – historical character named Rebecca: “Oh, I think I learn best by observation. I’m an artist– well, I sketch a little, or a lot, I suppose– and so I’m always looking at people and places and things and trying to capture them with my pencil.

I like to imagine what people are like from the way they move and the expressions on their faces. I try not to make judgments until I’ve studied the people, however. So I guess I’m an observer. I’m certainly not really a participant. Of course, I have to participate in all sorts of activities, but given my druthers, I’d sit on the sidelines and watch first, until I felt more confident.

Oh, dear, I sound like such a tentative creature. I guess I am that, after all– except for the once, when I eloped with Tommy. Now that time, I didn’t stop to study and observe. I threw myself right into that situation! And I guess I’ve never regretted it, not even when he died and left me alone.

Maybe it’s time again for me to stop studying and just jump in?
